Meet a knitter
Hello ladies - I caught your most recent podcast (“Do Do That”) and thought I would come out of lurking and be a participant. It is not something I am used to be being - but here I am - re-entering the world … I loved hearing about your knitting - I remember your Michael’s days - and your adventures as new moms - I am no longer such a bright and shiny penny - I have some tarnish on me … Here goes …
Name: Janice (Jenise) Reilly
Raverly alias: Jahknees
Other Social media? Not really - I gave up on Facebook years ago when I found that I got tired of all the bragging (not everyone’s life is always that great, you know - or maybe it’s just that mine sucks??) Now I just lurk on my kids to see what they are up to - be careful what you ask - you may not like what you see!! Damn that Instagram it sucks you in and is a whole education in itself.
When and how did you first learn to knit? When I was 8ish in Brownies - Snowy Owl made us finish our swatches when all I really wanted to do was play on the playground with the rest of the younger kids - maybe that’s why I don’t swatch to this very day. I am still friends with Snowy Owl and she makes me dish clothes and slippers for my birthday. <3
What was your first project? I made a chunky cross over vest made with yarn from the Purple Door which was a fantastic 1970s wool shop in Kelowna - full of crochet granny squares and acrylic - it would be very hip today (!)
What is your biggest knitting disaster? Too many to name - mostly involving gauge issues - too small blankets, too large sweaters - wait! there was the most beautiful expensive Jo Sharp sweater I made with Jo Sharpe wool and promptly washed and felted (before I knew that hand knits could not be machine washed) - turned out alright - more fulled than felted and it fixed the gauge issue!
What are you most proud of as a knitter? My perseverance - technically I have frogged more than I have knit!
What are you favorite items to knit? Projects where gauge is not an issue - socks, hats and scarves/shawls/cowls
Are you a process knitter or a product knitter? Product - but mostly I just like to have something to do so I have an excuse to watch ridiculous amounts of Netflix (like seriously ridiculous amounts of Netflix - I cannot emphasize this point enough)
Do you have any knitting goals? Projects? Techniques? Master gauge so I can make things that actually fit and are not a surprise at the end
Why do you keep coming back to knitting? It is my relaxation and my sanity while raising 1 teen and 2 pre-teen girls - the hormones are killing me as they go through puberty and I enter perimenopause - my poor husband is a saint!
Do you do any other fiber arts other than knitting? Some small amounts of needle point, and I can crochet
Do you have any other super powers other than knitting? Being a mother to 3 girls. I am also incredibly logical and honest. Not always to my benefit. I can be a little bit blunt ;o) Also for an oldie, I have a reasonable knowledge of trendy things - I am stealth - I may look like a stogie middle age woman, but I know of what the youngun’s speak - oh yeah - and I thrift good! I am good at finding good things at Value Village.
Anything else you’d like to tell the world? (shameless self promotion!) Nope- self promotion is not some thing I am good at.
Good luck and I actually read your Podcast notes - they are incredibly detailed and well done!
